Kuns Klub

What is Art? Well, I'm sure we all have our own opinions, differences and reasons. Mrs Hewitt, the senior phase art teacher, takes all our different views and tries to turn them into something we could all use one day. Apart from painting and learning many new techniques of art, most of us get the chance to relax, think and chat to our friends!

Many of the students attending extra art have said that Mrs Hewitt has helped them to perfect their art to the best of their ability and has done so with perseverance. Besides classroom activities, the grade 7's was given a research project on South African artists. (background, style of art, etc.) Some say that they enjoyed this opportunity, as they got the chance to learn much more about South African art and our artists. Our grade 7 learners say that it was interesting to find out about the styles that the different artists use etc.

From grade 1, we have been learning how to work with different media, e.g. painting, pottery, dye, paper maché, fabric painting and craft work. In the grade 7 extra art class we have been doing a combination of these media throughout the year and brought home beautiful end products.

For the grade 7 class art this year, we did much painting and a paper maché mask which we decorated with feathers and other craft elements. The grade 7's are currently working on possibly their last art project of the year - the decorative props for the grade 7 end of the year concert.

We asked many of the grade 7 extra art students why they attend extra art and this is what most of the responses rounded off to...

  • Relaxation
  • Inspiration
  • Thoughtful (very thoughtful...according also to Mrs Hewitt as she believes that art is much more thoughtful than mathematics...!)
  • Gossip

Mrs Hewitt has said that she enjoyed teaching the grade 7's of 2007 because they were unique, had their own ideas but took her advice as well. From art in grade 1, 2 and 3 with the "wacky and funky" Mrs Jansen, to art with Mrs Hewitt in grade 4, 5, 6 & 7, we have all learnt a lot and will take our knowledge with us.

SPEECH AND CREATIVE DRAMA

Creative drama: It is important in a child's development that their imagination and creativity are nurtured to help them reach their full potential in life. Creative Drama stimulates the imagination through story telling, games, role play and problem solving. It builds confidence and life skills and teaches them to think out of the box. Many of the exercises are from tried and true ideas that I have developed over years of teaching speech and drama.

Speech: Through speech exercises, poems and prose children are taught to speak with confidence in a clear, articulate manner which helps them with orals and public speaking and also enhances their ability to think on their feet.

GAIL PETERSEN is a senior member of the Speech and Drama College of S A. Gail also offers classes in Voice, Communication and Public speaking to Grade 7 learners.

DEBATING CLUB

Should evolution be taught in schools?

From an early age I was taught that God created the world in 7 days. My grade seven teacher has made me doubt my beliefs. Should the theory of evolution be taught in schools? Is my teacher right or is she wrong?

Charles Darwin stated in his book on the origin of the species that evolution was a fact and proposed the theory of natural selection to explain this fact. Evolution theory is based on historical and physical evidence that the earth and its inhabitants have evolved over billions of years. In other words, he put forward a theory that we humans have evolved from apes over these years. But this creates a problem for students whose belief system falls into the area of Creation science, which teaches that God has especially created the human soul and thereby differentiated humans from lower animals. Some creationists even believe that there is an "anti-god" conspiracy in the scientific world.

The central point is that creation science can only be taught as a concept that people believe in and cannot be taught as an actual truth as its claims are beyond the realm of science and cannot be tested. It is just that - a belief - a faith. Furthermore Judeo-Christian beliefs cannot be discussed in isolation. In terms of our constitution beliefs of other religions and secular movements such as Hinduism, Islam, traditional African beliefs etc) would have to be explored so that Christianity does not appear superior to other religions Moreover, if we allow our beliefs to influence whether we discuss one scientific theory with children, based on fear that we distort their belief system, how far could this go? Will theories in geology, biology, nuclear science have to be gone over with a fine toothcomb to make sure that they do not interfere with, or contradict, any doctrine - whatever the religion? We then lose the purpose of science - to seek out truth.

It is in the dogmatic argument either for or against a certain teaching practice that students will lose out. Science and religion deal with separate areas of human experience, and both deserve coverage in our schools. We need to be taught how to think for ourselves, and how to reason critically from evidence, to get ahead in the global 21st century. This is the job of both science and our inherent belief systems.

My conclusion? I believe Mrs. Chandler - my history teacher - is right to teach me about evolution. I feel however that evolutionary science should be taught in the Natural science class and religious beliefs in Life Orientation. Both aspects need to be explored so I can come to understand and function fully and effectively in the world in which I live.

Thank you.

POTTERY PROJECTS - LEARNING THROUGH CLAY PLAY

What is Clay Play? Pottery classes for children to consolidate learning and stimulate development.

Working with clay as a satisfying 3-dimensional medium encourages developmental progress in many areas. Besides learning a new skill, the young potter becomes part of a process involving listening skills, concentration and planning. Further benefits include:

  • Improved fine and gross motor control as the child learns to measure and control his/her sense of touch in moulding and shaping the clay
  • Emotional satisfaction as feelings of success builds self-esteem.
  • Cognitive stimulation as the child measures, estimates and predicts the final outcome.
  • Numeric concepts ie constancy of mass, even when shape changes, are fostered
  • Learning a life skill which offers balance and pleasure.

About the teacher:

My name is Daryl Newton. I am a qualified teacher and Potter who has taught for 30 years and run a pottery studio for children. My interest lies in introducing children to the medium of clay, teaching new skills, encouraging creativity and building a positive self image. I am assisted by my two pottery assistants Louise and Rachel. Together we form the team which works at nine schools in the Northern suburbs.

Class times and fees:

Classes at Kenridge take place on two days of the week. Mondays for the Pre-Primary child at Pixies Playschool from 12:45 to 13:25. More recently we have introduced a second group on the same day, from 13:40-14:20.

On Tuesdays classes take place in the Technology Room and cater for Grade 1 and 2 at 13:00-13:40 and 13:40-14:20. Grade 3 and up come from 14:30 to 15:15. Everything the children make, I fire and hand back at a later date. The cost for the term includes all clay, firing, pottery paints and glazing. Some exciting projects this year included: Cat Candle Holders, Hen Teaspoon Holders, Calenders for the new year, as well as Cellphone Holders, and Elephants! We are all very proud of our creations!

PUPPETRY / POPPEKAS

Puppetry is a multi-faceted art. It includes acting, script writing, design and modeling, manipulation, costume and décor design, music, singing and dancing.

It has been decided that puppetry members commit themselves for the year (not for a term).

Views from puppet members:

I like Puppetry because you learn to speak in different voices and how to handle different kinds of puppets. I also like making the puppets and doing the rehearsals, but best of all I LOVE doing the show! I really enjoy puppetry. - Catherine Anderson

Ek wil graag toneel speel. Poppekas is heeltemal iets nuut vir my en so is dit lekker. - Roezhae van der Westhuizen

When you do puppetry you can go absolutely CRAZY with fun and laughter and lots of things. You can express yourself. The time goes by so fast in Puppetry. - Gaby Masureik

I liked to watch puppets when I was little. I found it very funny. I can act in Puppetry, put on strange voices and talk a lot! - Ashley May

- Jana Cloete

I keep coming to Puppetry because I like to make puppets and act them out. - Stuart Carmichael-Green.

THEORY OF MUSIC

We believe that music tuition in our school not only contributes towards the establishment of a healthy balance between the physical, academic and aesthetic aspects of the development of our learners, but that the disciplines associated with it (intellectual, physical, educational and creative), can play a positive role in other spheres as well as in later life.

It is for this reason that we try to fulfil as many needs as possible as far as instrumental tuition is concerned, both in the serious and lighter genres. Due to the fact that we believe in whole school development, it is important to us that even those who cannot take part in the instrumental tuition program should be introduced to the world of music through the Arts and Culture learning area. It is here that we seriously attempt to emphasise the value of the aesthetic in our way of living as well as the way it contributes to the development of life skills in general. At the moment, we have eight educators on our music staff. A wide variety of musical activities are offered.

Opportunities to perform in front of an audience are offered during assemblies and at our different chamber concerts. Every three to five years the school stages a musical production where the learners are given the opportunity of demonstrating their special talents in the performing arts and are initiated into the world of show business.

PIANO

Our mission is:

  • to give each piano learner the enjoyment of making music,
  • to choose repertoire according to the learner's ability, interest and personality,
  • to develop a secure technique and
  • to give learners the opportunity of participating in ensemble playing.

Learners from Gr 1 to Gr 7 may receive piano tuition.

Learners interested in piano tuition must first give their names in at the office. Assessment of new applications is necessary before tuition can commence. Your child's name will be placed on a waiting list, should our quota of learners be full. Having a piano is an important requirement before any learner can start with lessons.

During practical lessons learners receive tuition in technical work, studies and pieces. Aspects such as sight reading and aural training also receive attention during lessons.

Beginners receive theory tuition during lessons. Learners are placed in group sessions from Unisa Gr 1. Teachers will advise learners in this regard. Participation in external examinations (Unisa, Royal Schools and Trinity College), Eisteddfod, music competitions and other concerts are strongly recommended.

RECORDER

Recorder lessons are a wonderful introduction to the world of instrumental instruction. Learners from grade 1-7 can take recorder as an instrument. Sight reading and Aural Training also receive attention during lessons. The recorder has many advantages:

  • It is an exceptionally versatile instrument and can be started at a relatively early age, compared with other wind instruments.
  • The cost is low and it is readily available in the widest variety of makes.
  • It is a handy, light and mobile instrument.
  • Recorder playing develops the ear, because it leads to the intensification and refinement of listening.
  • Students will learn the correct posture, breathing techniques and fingerings and music notation as they develop the repertoire.
  • It offers your child an opportunity to express themselves during the most creative time of their lives.
  • It offers your child a situation where goals are set and achieved, helping them learn that rewards are earned through practice and perseverance.
  • All the different sizes of recorders that are learned over the course of time are an investment – they need not be replaced.
  • It provides possibilities for ensemble playing.
  • There is a large repertoire of early, high Baroque and modern periods for solo work, accompanied works and ensemble music.

VIOLIN

Violin, as for other instruments, is there to be enjoyed. It is a slow learning process, but once mastered, gives great joy to the player as well as the listener.

The advantage of the violin is that one can enjoy it with others. Playing in ensembles and bigger orchestras enables us to interact and make music together.

It is a discipline that teaches us the right technique, posture and practice methods.

Violin pupils are expected to practice regularly (+- 5 days/week)

Pupils can start from Gr 1 – 4.

Violins can be bought or rented.

CHOIR

Koorleiers: Cecile Coetzee (Juniorkoor); Florence Stassen (Seniorkoor)

The school has a Junior Choir (Grades 1 to 3) and a Senior Choir (Grades 4 to 7). Learners are selected after a voice test, which is compulsory. New learners who start attending our school at a later stage, must please notify the educator concerned if they are interested in joining the choir. There are no costs involved in this activity.

The Junioir Choir practises on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 19:00 and some Fridays from 12:00 to 12:45. The Senior Choir practises from 7:30 to 8:00 on Tuesday mornings as well as from 13:15 to 14:10.

During practices we pay attention to the development of breathing and the voice and the mastering and musical interpretation of appropriate repertoire, chosen according to the learners' interests and ages.

It is important to us that the learners are introduced to the importance of all aspects of choral participation, namely, the enjoyment of singing together, the aesthetic, discipline, a good choir tone, good choir repertoire and folk music of different groups in our community as well as from other countries.

Both choirs are given the opportunity to perform at school functions, assemblies, other schools, churches and the Eisteddfod.

DRUMKIT

The best age for a child to take up Drumkit is 12 years old. Learning drumming helps to develop co-ordination between hands and feet. In later life a growing child finds it a lot easier learning to drive a car because he or she has enough co-ordination skills. To play drums well is to make a drumkit sound like a musical instrument. This takes many hours of practice and discipline.

SOLO SINGING

Tuition in solo singing is not an activity offered by the school's music department on a permanent basis. We would, however, like to give talented pupils the opportunity to take part. The music staff will therefore only assist the learners for the few months before the Eisteddfod. The educators must provide extra time for this in spite of extremely full timetables which also include tuition after school. According to the rules of the Eisteddfod, a maximum of only four learners per Eisteddfod class may be entered (four girls and four boys per age group).

As a result of the above-mentioned, the following criteria will be used when entering learners for solo singing:

  1. Learners will only qualify for entering the Eisteddfod if they are members of one of the two school choirs and attend choir practices diligently.
  2. The educators will use their discretion when selecting learners to enter, depending on their talent, their contribution towards the choir of which they are members as well as the available time of the educators. The learners will also have to be available for practice during break times and after school.
  3. The fact that your child has been entered does not necessarily mean that this will be the case every year, as we would sometimes like to give other talented learners the opportunity to enter.
