The Debating Club is open to all learners from Grade 6 to 7. We meet every Wednesday from 14:30 - 15:30 in Miss Sayers’ class, during the second and third terms. Here we discuss issues, think outside of the box and have a lot of fun arguing about interesting topics. Our year is concluded with a very prestigious gala evening, where debaters are given the chance to showcase their talent. Everyone has an opinion and it is one’s responsibility to share it with those around them.
Take a stand for what you believe in – it will open a whole new world of opportunity to you!
Frances Kempton-Jones won the trophy at this years’ Debating Gala Evening, held on 2 December 2009. Lara du Plessis came second and Emily Winsor took third place.

KIDS SHOULD BE EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE by Frances-Kempton Jones
The intergration of Technology – an invasion into our lives?
Will we see a person walk on Mars or rather when will that be?
What about the first brain transplant?
These are just a .few of the many future trends and the exciting times that we as children are part of.
What does it all mean for us, kids and our future?
Good Evening, Chairperson, adjudicators, fellow debaters and ladies and gentlemen
As a thirteen year old I, together with my fellow debaters have most likely not given statements such as ‘technology intergration’ or ‘brain transplants’ much thought.
There are of course many other immediate aspects of the future which would certainly excite us in our Grade 7 year.
Some of them would definitely include:
The exciting but unknown world of high school –new school uniform, the many different teachers, class changes, meeting new friends and the feeling of being part of a whole new structure.
Then there is the confusing but exhilarating up-side-down world of a teenager, where your friend’s opinion of what’s in and what’s out, means the world to you. One of the ‘in’ items are definitely the hair straightener working its magic on ‘straight’ hair in some cases.
Driving lessons is certainly high on the list of future excitement and of course, dreaming about our brandnew cars.
Our future would definitely not be complete without important buzz words such as:
Google Facebook
Gadgets MiXit
Cool sites ipods
Multi-media MP3’s
Cell- phones
Internet – links to this / links to that / forbidden links, just to mention a few,
No future can exclude possibilities of travelling and our wonderful country certainly has many beautiful sites I have yet to visit. What a wonderful way to broaden our knowledge and horizons.
Exciting times lie ahead with the 2010 Fiva World Cup Soccer. The international flavour of so many players will definitely create a feeling of greatness in our country. That feeling of excitement will no doubt extend to the fabulous longer holiday in the middle of the year. Now that is something to look forward to.
We are part of the greatest natural resource called ‘youth’, but we are also the builders of our future.
We have to foster creativity with a toolbox of skills to make our future exciting and special. We have to use every tool to mould ideas, aspects, events and memorable moments together.
I end off with a final declaration for us kids:
We should be honourerd to be a member of the future, and we look forward to a great deal of excitement, there is much to do, to achieve, and to share with help of the world’s most incredible computer – which is of course our very own brain.
