ACTIVE GOLF
Norgarb's Sports Academy formed Active Golf back in 1998 and is being run by the current WP Golf Captain, Cameron Johnston. The mission was to promote and grow the game of golf to all ages at primary schools throughout the Western Cape. Today there are more than forty pupils enrolled as the game continues to grow and grow. Classes are held very Friday and are forty-five minutes in duration. The grade one's and two's attend class on the Koos Eksteen field where we turn the field into a mini driving range.
This is an introductory phase where the pupils are introduced to the game of golf and learn all about the safety aspects of hitting golf balls on the range as well as rules and etiquette and learning to play in groups etc. We encourage the pupil to bring his/her clubs along but we do have an assortment of clubs should they need to borrow.
In grade three the student then joins us at the Wagner's Driving Range in Durbanville. It is here that they are exposed to the proper greens, flagsticks, fairways, bunkers, tee boxes, club house, putting greens, chipping greens and of course a proper golf hole.
Here they are also taught what a pitch mark repairer is, how to repair a pitch mark, what a tee is, a marker, why do we shout 'Fore' when our ball is about to hit someone and the why we carry fourteen clubs in our golf bags, why we all can't hit at the same time and what is a golf handicap?
All Active Golfers become members of the club, which entitles them to a handicap and fifty percent discount on all green fees and practice balls.
As golf is all about muscle memory it is important that you keep swinging as much as you possibly can even if it is for only ten minutes in the garden every night swinging at the daisy's.
For further information please contact Cameron Johnston on 082 897 4017.

The G-WIZ! philosophy of teaching combines the scientific and high performance approach (demands for correct technique) with the relaxed and light method of teaching through fun and enjoyment.
The focus is to test the gymnasts' ability to perform the basic floor and jumping skills that form the foundation of competitive gymnastics. The training emphasis is on correct technique and stylish presentation. G-WIZ! has a unique approach. Operating within the schools' extra-curricular program, it offers children the experience of a scientific physical education\training as a basis for ALL sports.
G-WIZ! also provides a competitive club programme, a Physical Education programme (during school time) and heads its own outreach and development programme for children in Hangberg harbour Village, Hout Bay.

CLAY PLAY
What is Clay Play? Pottery classes for children to consolidate learning and stimulate development.
Working with clay as a satisfying 3-dimensional medium encourages developmental progress in many areas. Besides learning a new skill, the young potter becomes part of a process involving listening skills, concentration and planning.
Further benefits include:
- Improved fine and gross motor control as the child learns to measure and control his/her sense of touch in moulding and shaping the clay
- Emotional satisfaction as feelings of success builds self-esteem.
- Cognitive stimulation as the child measures, estimates and predicts the final outcome.
- Numeric concepts ie constancy of mass, even when shape changes, are fostered
- Learning a life skill which offers balance and pleasure.
About the teacher:
My name is Daryl Newton. I am a qualified teacher and Potter who has taught for 30 years and run a pottery studio for children. My interest lies in introducing children to the medium of clay, teaching new skills, encouraging creativity and building a positive self image. I am assisted by my two pottery assistants Louise and Rachel. Together we form the team which works at nine schools in the Northern suburbs.
Class times and fees:
Classes at Kenridge take place on two days of the week. Mondays for the Pre-Primary child at Pixies Playschool from 12h45 to 13h25. More recently we have introduced a second group on the same day, from 13h40-14h20.
On Tuesdays classes take place in the Technology Room and cater for Grade 1 and 2 at 13h00-13h40 and 13h40-14h20. Grade 3 and up come from 14h30 to 15h15. Everything the children make, I fire and hand back at a later date. Projects for this first term include a garden tortoise, a berry basket, a candle holder, an owl pot, a watermelon pip pot, a study in miniatures, a guinea fowl and a pizza slice.
