THE HISTORY OF KENRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

In 1954, around July/August, a resident of the estate known as Kenridge, Mr John Mashford, approached the Parow School Board with regard to building a primary school at Kenridge.

The Ruyteplaats Estates, the owners of Kenridge, had made a site available. There was no positive reaction from the P.S.B. However, after several more approaches had been made, the secretary, Mr Smalberger, got in touch with Mr Mashford. He asked if it were possible that about twenty children could be counted on to start such a school.

Mr Smalberger suggested that people in the area should be asked whether their children would attend such a school. At the time, these children were attending the Durbanville Primary School. A full day was spent walking to various farms and houses, in pouring rain and shocking conditions of mud and slush! Eventually, a list of thirty-seven prospective pupils was sent to P.S.B.

It was then arranged that Mr Mashford would attend a full committee meeting of the P.S.B. It was suggested that two representatives of Kenridge Estate should accompany Mr Mashford. They were Mrs Joan Rivette (for the English speaking residents) and Mrs Ellen de Villiers-Louw (for the Afrikaans speaking residents). This was fortunate as the meeting was conducted entirely in Afrikaans and Mrs Louw was able to act as interpreter! Dominee Klopper, chairman of the meeting, was not at all keen in the idea, due to the economic recession.

At this time, Mr Mashford was an executive member of the Kenridge Civic Association, as were Messrs Tom Rivette, Roger Nottcutt, Vic Cradock, Diddy Armstrong and Wally Schaarges. The gentlemen decided that the Olde Barn in De Villiers Avenue should be offered to the P.S.B. free of charge, until such time as a proper school could be built. The Barn was exactly what its name implied. In the Estate's old days, as Witteboom Farm, it housed the farmer's livestock.

With a floor and a bit of plumbing, it had been used for civic events. A very active P.T.A. was formed to raise funds for the school. Mrs Con Creel and Mrs Mashford designed a school uniform. The P.S.B. informed Mrs Mashford that the status of the school was to be preparatory, which at this time was a shock for parents of the learners. During September 1956, the first of several morning markets was held to raise funds. Mr F. Swiegelaar, from Philadelphia, was appointed as principal for 1957.

1971 Brought with it major changes and reconstruction. Most of the original building was demolished and a double-storey building was erected. Mr G.F. van Wyk was appointed principal in 1972. Under his competent guidance, enrolment figures doubled by 1974. This meant that more classrooms were required and pre-fabricated classrooms had to be constructed to accommodate the growing numbers. Since 1982, when records were first kept, Kenridge Primary School pupils had represented Western Province in Chess, Rugby, Cricket, Gymnastics, Softball and Tennis.

In 1987 Kenridge Primary boasted 16 Western Province representatives. In 1989 Mr Van Wyk retired after 17 years as headmaster of Kenridge Primary School. Mr Mickey Lötter was appointed to this post. During Mr Lötter's term of office, the school became a Model C school. Additional teachers were appointed by the Governing Body to accommodate the ever increasing numbers. Xhosa and Computer instruction were introduced to all pupils. A new playing field was established, a reception area was created in the foyer and the pre-fabricated classes were given a face-lift.

On the sporting front, Hockey for boys was introduced and the Green Team came into being. Mr Lötter was compelled to hand over the reigns temporarily to Mr Keith O`Kennedy, during a spell of ill health. Mr O` Kennedy, in the capacity of acting headmaster, did a splendid job of keeping the school on track. Mr Lötter returned to his post, but continued ill health led to his early retirement. On the academic front, the Department of Education had set new trends.

1994 Brought about even more changes. A new principal Mr. Greg Albrecht ushered in a new era at Kenridge Primary School. During the latter part of 1994, plans were put into operation for the construction of a swimming pool. On 27 March 1995, the Keith O`Kennedy Pool was officially opened, bringing a new dimension to our sports programme.

Over the years a number of new venues have been built to accommodate our growing number of learners.

COMPUTER CENTRES

Information Technology at Kenridge Primary School

We are quite aware of the need for trained IT personnel in the world out there. We start early at Kenridge Primary. From Grade R right through to Grade 7 we build on the skills of our learners.

The Grade R classes spend 25 min in the computer room every second week. Here they use educational software such as Little Brown Bear and Charlie Chimp, and in the process develop their "click and drag" skills. It is delightful to hear their shrieks of excitement as they work on these programmes.

Our Foundation Phase classes are divided in half and the learners spend 25 min at a time working at typing skills and basic computer skills. The Intermediate and Senior Phase have access to a bigger facility of 40 computers. Each class has computer lessons for 75 min every second week. Here we focus on the Microsoft Office Suite, starting the Grade 4's off in Word and Publisher. Excel is introduced in Grade 5 and Power Point in Grade 7. We follow an integrated approach where various projects and activities are planned around specific skills we would like the learners to master. The internet enables the learners to research information for tasks set by their teachers.

We also make use of Evalunet's e-SCHOOL to help the teachers in assessing Learning Programmes with custom made assessments. Evalunet allows complete control in content and question setting. Indeed a very handy educational tool. READERS ARE LEADERS, a reading programme has also been a very useful tool for both language groups. Software such as 2Type (Typing Tutorial), Bodywise, Captain Co-ordinate, The Map Detectives and Faiths & Celebrations are also used in the computer room.

It is indeed a privilege to be able to empower our learners for the future with the technology we have available.

Watch this space for lessons on how to create tables in Word, graphs in Excel, and much more! Worksheets that are given to the learners will be placed on this page.

LIBRARY / BIBILIOTEEK

"To read a book for the first time is to make an acquaintance with a new friend; to read it for a second time is to meet an old one." Anonymous, Chinese saying.

Our school library forms an integral part of the school and offers a service to both learners and educators. We continually encourage and support a lifelong love of reading, as this develops the learners’ imagination and many other skills. It is important that children realise the great enjoyment and knowledge that lie between the covers of a book.

At present there are 1 846 borrowers who make use of the facilities on offer. Computers with CD-ROM and internet facilities offer the opportunity for online research in the library, in addition to the numerous books available.

Afrikaanse Reeksboeke

Lekker lees.

RECYCLING / HERNUWING

At our school, recycling is not just a side-line event, IT IS AN OCCASION! Every Monday morning, from 06:15 to 08:00, parents, teachers and learners recycle with vigour, passion and sweat! Recycling initially started at Kenridge Primary in 2000, with paper only.

At present we recycle paper, glass and cans. We have purchased a number of items for the school with money that has been brought in through recycling, e.g. outdoor furniture, shelving, an athletics podium and trees.

The gate at the Tygerbergvalley Road is open daily, so you are welcome to deposit your recycling at any time during the week. PLEASE ensure that you put your recycling INTO the specific igloo and not next to it! This gate opens from Tuesday - Friday at 07:15 and closes on theses days at 15:45.

Refer to the Bulletin for news on "Recycling at our School".

Any queries re Recycling, please contact Sandy Fourie at fourie_s@kenridge.org.za
