ACTIVE GOLF

Norgarb's Sports Academy formed Active Golf back in 1998 and is being run by the current WP Golf Captain, Cameron Johnston. The mission was to promote and grow the game of golf to all ages at primary schools throughout the Western Cape. Today there are more than forty pupils enrolled as the game continues to grow and grow. Classes are held very Friday and are forty-five minutes in duration. The grade one's and two's attend class on the Koos Eksteen field where we turn the field into a mini driving range.

This is an introductory phase where the pupils are introduced to the game of golf and learn all about the safety aspects of hitting golf balls on the range as well as rules and etiquette and learning to play in groups etc. We encourage the pupil to bring his/her clubs along but we do have an assortment of clubs should they need to borrow.

In grade three the student then joins us at the Wagner's Driving Range in Durbanville. It is here that they are exposed to the proper greens, flagsticks, fairways, bunkers, tee boxes, club house, putting greens, chipping greens and of course a proper golf hole.

Here they are also taught what a pitch mark repairer is, how to repair a pitch mark, what a tee is, a marker, why do we shout 'Fore' when our ball is about to hit someone and the why we carry fourteen clubs in our golf bags, why we all can't hit at the same time and what is a golf handicap?

All Active Golfers become members of the club, which entitles them to a handicap and fifty percent discount on all green fees and practice balls.

As golf is all about muscle memory it is important that you keep swinging as much as you possibly can even if it is for only ten minutes in the garden every night swinging at the daisy's.

For further information please contact Cameron Johnston on 082 897 4017.

ATHLETICS / ATLETIEK

We at Kenridge encourage all our learners to give of their best during our mass class participation during the fourth term. Learners compete against each other in field and track events. Our Interhouse meetings (one for the Foundation Phase and one for the Intermediate/Senior Phase) take place in the fourth term. The top athletes emerging from this meeting form the team that practices and partakes at meetings during the first term of the following year.

Leerders oefen in Kenridge sportdrag.

For any queries or information regarding athletics, please contact Mrs Fisher or Mr Rossouw.

BALLET

Ballet is wonderful for children. It is a basic grounding for many things in a child's future. It teaches them co-ordination (many paediatricians recommend ballet), discipline, self-confidence, poise and teamwork. Ballet is also the basis for gymnastics, ice-skating, modelling, horse-riding, karate, modern dancing and many other physical activities.

The Royal Academy of Dancing Ballet classes are offered in English and Afrikaans for children from the age of three-and-a-half years old. As enjoyment is the most important reason for learning ballet as a little child, we begin with nursery rhymes in the form of dances. Examinations are held annually for children over six, enabling them to be awarded bronze, silver and gold medals.

We arrange a production on stage, or a workshop annually, which is a very exciting experience for the children. Whether one's child learns ballet and folk dance for a short period or for many years, there are numerous ways in which they benefit.

Gillian Saffrey, danced professionally in Johannesburg and New York as well as taught for the Royal Academy in the USA. She examines the 3rd year post-Matric students at UCT, and with the Advanced Teaching diploma and many years experience, has a thorough understanding of the requirements of ballet.

Lesanne Saffrey, a member and teacher of the Imperial Society national/folk dancing and the Royal Academy of Dancing ballet, has been teaching for 9 years and holds her BBA degree.

For more information or queries, contact Gillian or Lesanne Saffrey after hours at 021 913 4582.

GYMNASTICS

ABOUT G-WIZ!

The Director of Gym Wizards is Tania Williams, previous National Coach. G-WIZ! draws on a vast richness of international and local experience in the field of children's movement. Tania, who mentors the coaches, has worked with Russian methodologists, child and educational psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists - and is a mother of a lively 13 year old boy. She was Springbok and National Champion prior to completing her Psychology degree at UCT (1989). In 2001 she completed her Honours in Psychology. She was National coach from 1990-1999, attending numerous international events including 1998 Commonwealth Games and 1999 World Championships. She has produced 10 Springbok Gymnasts.

The G-WIZ! philosophy of teaching combines the scientific and high performance approach (demands for correct technique) with the relaxed and light method of teaching through fun and enjoyment.

The focus is to test the gymnasts' ability to perform the basic floor and jumping skills that form the foundation of competitive gymnastics. The training emphasis is on correct technique and stylish presentation. G-WIZ! has a unique approach. Operating within the schools' extra-curricular program, it offers children the experience of a scientific physical education\training as a basis for ALL sports.

G-WIZ! also provides a competitive club programme, a Physical Education programme (during school time) and heads its own outreach and development programme for children in Hangberg harbour Village,Hout Bay.

We offer a basic introduction to gymnastics. If children are talented or interested in competitive levels, we refer them to clubs in the area. The Head Coach at Kenridge is Nigel Jacobs. Gr 1 & 2 girls: Wednesdays 13:15 – 14:15

Your child will receive a letter as soon as we receive the times. Should we not have a match against another school, then we will organise matches amongst our own teams.

Please ensure that your child is dressed correctly for matches: White shorts (boys) / green skorts (girls), golf shirt, green hockey socks.

Equipment:

  1. Hockey stick: The stick must not be shorter than the head of the femur and not longer than the belly button. Don't buy a big stick, hoping that your child will grow into it. A stick that is not the right size will hamper the development of your child's hockey skills.
  2. Hockey ball
  3. Shin pads
  4. Gum guard
  5. Bottle of water

All your child's equipment must be cleary marked with his/her name. Hockey balls, shin pads, gum guards and hockey socks are available from the school shop.

Oefeninge:

Gr 1 & 2 seuns: Maandae 13:15 – 14:15
Gr 1 & 2 meisies: Woensdae 13:15 – 14:15

Wedstryde:

Donderdae

This year (2008) we plan to include as many teams in all our league matches as possible, to take part in mini-netball tournaments (playing away and home) and to organize a mini-netball clinic.

Thank you to all the parents who support our young stars of the future! We are looking forward to a fantastic 2008 season.

RIVERDANCE

A little about what I teach and do. Irish dancing better known as Riverdance named after the show "Riverdance" is available at Kenridge Primary School every Friday afternoon and on Tuesday evenings. Starting from beginners to senior students we are active in all Irish competitions held in South Africa, as well as Eisteddfods and Festivals in and around Cape Town.

Why Irish Dancing?? Well over and above it being a very good form of exercise and enjoyment, the students get the opportunity to perform and enjoy the creative and innovative dance form that is sweeping the world of show business.

It is extremely good for your child to be involved in this dance form, as it works on the well held posture and abdominal structure of the body, as well as being able to work on two different dance structures.

  1. Soft shoe work
  2. Hard shoe (like tap dancing)

Classes are as follows:

1 X week classes Fridays Beginners 13:15 - 14:00, Juniors 14:00 - 15:00, Intermediate 15:00 - 16:00, Advanced 16:00 - 17:00, Seniors 17:00 - 18:00

RUGBY

There are many exciting events coming up in the second half of the rugby season. Among these are 6 matches, a seven-a-side tournament, Beaumont Derby Day, interhouse and an U13 tour to Argentina.

It has been a busy season up until now, which has included an U13 tour to Mossel Bay. However, the teachers, coaching staff and learners are all extremely excited for the upcoming matches and events.

At Kenridge we strive to produce positive rugby where we show a good appreciation of the laws, and maintain good discipline on the field. On the training field we promote good skills and always give our best both at practices and during matches. Our aim is to always enjoy the game and to play as a team, whilst setting individual goals at the same time.

We hope to see you on the side of the field cheering our boys on. May we all have a super season of success and most importantly, enjoyment.
